Got Favicon?
Do you know what a favicon is? No??!! Well it’s those little images you see on your tab or in the browser bar when you visit a web site. They look great and beat the heck out of those generic dog eared paper icons you see.
On the surface they appear to be just a piece of bling, but honestly, favicons can help you with your branding efforts. They are a reflection of what your blog or site is about.
In the past, we had to visit a favicon generator, create an image, and store that image at the root directory of the blog. Or, we could host the image and write a morsel of code into the header.php so that browsers would know where to find the image.
Favicon life is easier now. Here at Crabbysbeach, a plug-in was recently installed so that the bloggers can display their own favicon, and the following is a tutorial on how to activate and set-up the plug-in for your blog.
1) At your Dashboard, click on Plug-Ins/Plug-ins installed. You’ll find the Plug-Ins menu on the left functions bar of your Dashboard:
2) Scroll down the Plug-Ins Directory until you find Favicons. Activate:
![]()
3) At the Settings menu of your Dashboard’s function bar, click on Favicons:
4) Now the fun begins. You have 3 choice for a Favicon to display. You can choose your Gravatar, a 32 x 32 gif image, or pick one from the set that comes with the plug-in.
Of course, I will suggest the 32 x 32 gif because it will make a unique statement. To use this option, you must create a 32 pixels x 32 pixels image in a .gif format and upload the image to a server or image hosting service. Then you put the URL of the image into the box.
Make sure that whatever option you choose, that you engage the radio button:
5) Click Save and now you have your own, unique branding favicon:
![]()
There is another beneifit to creating your own 32 x 32 gif image. The same URL can be use in the Follow Me plug-in, which in turn can be your branding statement on Twitter.
Pretty darn cool, huh?
Wow, this idea just hit me. A future contest to see who has the coolest favicon at the Beach! Anyone want to run that later?
A Word Of Caution About Plug-ins:
Sometimes plug-ins conflict with each other or themes, so if you start experiencing blog malfunctions, begin deactivating plug-ins first to see if this cures the problems.

Oh, Alex… favicons are dumb. Maybe some people notice them but I can’t focus on anything that tiny.
I’m only doing this if I can use one of my sarcastic emoticons.
You’re on!
